I have a 3.2 1985 carerra motor in my 914...Great power, great fun... The problem. It smokes while idle...but mainly after it has warmed up. When under load, and when I lay into it, no smoking?
Could this be a vacume issue, oil distribution issue? easy fix you think? Or do I face facts.....need valve guides? valve seals? or engine overhaul (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) Could anyone suggest? Craig |

Just kidding. Welcome to the club! I assume it's smoking out the exhaust, yes? It's really a very open question. Does your engine have carbs? How many miles? Upgrades/mods? How does it idle? Color of the smoke? etc., etc..... |

smoke on deceleration usually is with the valve guides. Seems odd that it only smokes at idle. Have someone follow you in your cloud of doom and have them tell you what they see. Could be that it is smoking most of the time, but you can't see it while driving.

The common knock on 3.2s is valve guides....
Depending on your intake and how the oil tank is plumbed you maybe be sucking oil from the tank. Do you run it real full or about a quart low? |

That is an old thread bump! I would agree with this, 3.2's were common for smoking due to valve guides. Also seen on a number of 911's and 914-6's the oil was 1-3 Qts overfilled. |

It’s got to be the record. Dan did a major engine overhaul, and found the rod bearings to be the culprit, while replacing the valve guides while in.
Runs like a top ever since and is the reliable bullet proof 3.2 liter we all have come to expect. Perhaps I’ll finally get out and meet the motley crew at some point. Always appreciate. |

Hey are you in Folsom? I am on the other side of Lake Natoma. How does a rod bearing turn into smoking at idle? Because it causes the rings to unseat perhaps? I had a bad rod bearing and I didnt even know until I tore down the motor for valve guides due to smoking on decel. |
